Surrey County Council
Surrey is home to over 1.1 million people and is Britain’s most densely populated county. Surrey County Council has put supporting economic growth at the heart of its priorities. Working as “one team” with boroughs and districts, the LEPs and other partners, the County Council’s aim is to ensure that Surrey residents and businesses receive high quality and value for money services.
The Surrey economy has shown strong growth in the last 12 months with Gross Value Added (GVA) increasing 8.1% between 2011 and 2012 to over £32bn, adding £2.4bn in a single year. This level of growth is unrivalled across the UK, with the Surrey economy growing by over 15% since 2009. The County Council recognises the importance of small businesses to the county economy and working with partners has developed a series of initiatives to support SMEs. For example, the Council is committed to placing 60% of council spend with local SMEs – which so far has resulted in almost £1 million per day being spent with local firms. The £35 million Superfast Surrey programme is on target to bring the fibre optic network to more than 80,000 households and businesses in hard-to-reach areas by the end of 2014, providing 99.7% coverage in Surrey.
The Council is also committed to supporting young people and the local economy by creating an additional 500 apprenticeships and investing £750,000 in boosting job prospects for young people. It has delivered a number of road schemes that help ease congestion including Walton Bridge which opened in 2013 and was the first new Thames crossing in 20 years.
Gatwick is the UK’s second largest airport and the most efficient single-runway airport in the world. We fly to more than 200 destinations in 90 countries, serving more than 41 million passengers a year. We recently announced 20 new long haul routes for 2016, covering four continents and moving us into the premier league of European airports flying more than 50 long haul routes.
Gatwick is a major economic driver for the South East region, generating around 21,000 on-airport jobs and a further 10,000 in the area. We participate in regional activities through active membership of economic groups and partnerships, working together to build a strong local supply chain; boost business and to strengthen opportunities for employment and skills development.
Last year we spent £74.1m in the Gatwick Diamond area, about a third of our total annual spend. SMEs are important to us, and we promote opportunities through networking, targeted events and sponsorship like this. We are delighted to be a sponsor of the Surrey SME Business Awards, and hope through this to help promote business excellence and innovation in the region. This reflects our active focus on improving opportunities for local business to supply to Gatwick.

The Borough of Epsom & Ewell lies around 15 miles southwest of London. It is the smallest district in Surrey, with a population of around 76,000. While the majority of people live in the urban areas of Epsom, Ewell and Stoneleigh, large areas to the south of the Borough are protected open space. The Borough is not only a place to live, but it is also the place where many people choose to work and run their businesses. Consultations have shown that encouraging economic development is a key priority for residents. Economic Vitality is one of six key priorities for the Epsom & Ewell Borough Council and over the last couple of years it has made progress in encouraging a successful retail and business environment within the Borough. The Council is also working to create an environment conducive to economic development and entrepreneurship. The small business community is seen as central to the economic success of Epsom & Ewell. We all use Google. Every day. Because we know, like and trust it to deliver the best results. Google makes its money by showing ads at the top and down the right hand side called AdWords or sponsored links. That’s what we do all day, every day and have done since 2007. We work with dozens of clients who know that AdWords are a key part of their marketing strategy and outsource their campaign activity to us for efficiency and peace of mind. My Mustard clients also enjoy the benefits of Linked In, Twitter, You Tube and Facebook pay per click opportunities as well as the phenomenon of remarketing.
The recipe for My Mustard is pretty straightforward: Take three professionals with names beginning with J, a joke-telling pig-rabbit, the world’s biggest search engine, some forward thinking customers, and mix well. Add hours of number crunching, extensive market research, some seriously creative writing, a lot of patience, a bucketful of tenacity and a Bit of luck. Sprinkle with endless enthusiasm and serve hot. “The winner is the chef who takes the same ingredients as everyone else and produces the best results.”
We work really hard and we are nice people to do business with. We realised on day one that we can only do well if our clients do well so we try to stay focused on their success at all times. We really like what we do and it shows…. and we always play to win.
